| Abstract: | INTRODUCTION. Publication in a peer-reviewed journal is the ultimate lasting acknowledgement of an author's research, as well as the consummation of the scientific method. Numerous clinical and basic-science abstracts are presented annually at the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society's annual scientific meeting. Not all of them, however, culminate in publication in peer-reviewed journals. Multiple papers indicate that the time elapsed from presentation to publication ranges from 10-27 months. According to a recently published review article, the median publication rate arising from national scientific meetings, mainly from North America was 50percent. Specialties included surgery, cardiology, oncology, and ophthalmology among others. MATERIAL AND METHODS. A MEDLINE search of all abstracts presented at the 1996, 1997, and 1998 UHMS scientific meetings was undertaken between December 2001 and January 2002. The search was performed using both authors and key words within the title of the abstract. Meeting abstracts were grouped in three main categories: 1) Clinical hyperbaric and diving medicine; 2) Basic-science, including animal models and in vitro studies; and 3) Others including, technical aspects, mathematical models, and epidemiology. The publication rate, journal of publication and time to publication were analyzed. RESULTS. The overall publication rate in MEDLINE indexed journals for 1996, 1997, and 1998 was 17.9percent (26/145), 14.8percent (27/182) and 18.7percent (33/176) respectively. The average publication rate for these three years was 17.09percent (86/503); 51.1percent were categorized as basic-science, 33.7percent clinical and 15percent others. 24.4percent were published in Undersea Hyperb Med, 10.46percent in J Appl Physiol, and 9.3percent in Aviat Space Environ Med. The remainder were published in different specialty journals. Most papers were published within two years after presentation. CONCLUSION. The UHMS annual meeting abstract publication rate is significantly lower compared to other medical fields. An important step in the Evidence-Based medicine approach relies on scientific evidence.
