Title: PaO2 and PaCO2 DURING BREATH-HOLD

Abstract: BACKGROUND: This is Phase II of a 5-phase study of O2-enhanced breath-hold diving in which we measured the effects of hyperventilation (HV), a single O2 breath, nd exertion (EX) on breath-hold (BH) time and arterial and end-expiration O2 and CO2 at 1 ata. An accompanying abstract addresses BH times (Pollock et al., this meeting). METHODS: 10 males performed 12 BHs after 8 min rest periods while seated on a cycle ergometer. BHs investigated 3 variables: (1) no-HV or 1 min air HV (20 breaths. min-1); (2) a vital capacity breath of 0.21, 0.5, 1.0 FIO2; and (3) rest or exertion at 75 W during BH. End-tidal and radial arterial gs tensions (a) were measured twice at baseline (BL) and once after HV. Arterial and end-maximal-expiration O2 and CO2 were taken at end-BH. RESULTS: Replicate BL blood gases (mmHg) were: PaCO2 37+/-5 and 38+/-5; PaO2 102+/-7 and 101+/-8. End-HV blood gases were: PaCO2 20+/-4 and PaO2 139+/-7. End-BH PaCO2 and PaO2 are given in aqua box at right. After controlling for inter-subject variability, end-BH PaCO2 was significantly associated with EX and FIO2 but not with HV (p less than 0.0001, multiple linear regression). End-BH PaO2 was significantly associated with HV and FIO2 but not with EX (p less than 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: (1) HV decreased PaCO2 and increased PaO2 at end-HV as expected. (2) Hypoxia was greatest with 0.21 FIO2 and EX but was abolished by 0.5 or 1.0 FIO2. (2) Hypercapnia was greatest with 1.0 FIO2 and exertion.
