| Abstract: | Eleven years of clinical hyperbaric therapy at the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine are reviewed. During the period January 1979 thru December 1989, a total of 1,446 patients were treated with 31,599 treatment dives. Patients' ages ranged from 8 months to 88 years, with sixty-seven percent (935) of the patients being male. The majority of treatments were for clinical wound healing however, seventeen percent (251) of the treatments were for decompress ion sickness and twelve percent (174) were for carbon monoxide poisoning. One and a half percent (21) of treatments were for arterial gas embolism of which 14 (67%) of these were iatrogenically induced. The most common presenting side effect was barotrauma which occurred during approximately two percent (725) of the dives. Oxygen toxicity seizures occurred on eight occasions (0.025%). No pneumothoraces or deaths in the hyperbaric chamber occurred during this time frame. |
