Abstract: Introduction/Background: Scapa Flow is a popular site for recreational diving, virtually all of which is done from charter boats. Orkney Hyperbaric Unit (OHU), established in June 1999 is responsible for the management of all diving accidents occurring in Orkney waters. An initial survey suggested an unusually high incidence of accidents. This abstract presents data from two further years. Materials and Methods: All incidents managed by the unit are recorded using a standard proforma. All diveboat operators in Orkney supply OHU with returns of annual diver numbers which is cross referenced with dive permits issued by the local authority. A random sample of 258 divers were logged throughout the 2002 season to record the number of dives each completed. Total annual dives were estimated by multiplying the calculated average by the total of visiting divers. The same correction factor was applied to 2001 and 2000 data. Recorded shore dives carried out by local diving schools were added. Results: Year 2000 2001 2002, Number of MultidayDivers 3045 2642 2719, Estimated Dives 29492 26013 26841, Significant Accidents 31 43 34, DCI 19 30 23, MDNS 7 9 10, Incidence of significant accidents/1000 dives 1.05 1.65 1.23, Incidence of DCI/1000 dives 0.64 1.15 0.86, Mean dives per visiting diver 9.6, MDNS - Missed decompression greater than 3 minutes, no symptoms, - estimated. Figures to be finalised. Conclusions: Data from 2001 and 2002 confirms our initial findings of a high incidence of DCI. Factors contributing to this may relate to the nature of diving activity in Orkney together with high case ascertainment due to the cooperation of local diveboat operators and the proximity of a hyperbaric facility.
