Abstract: 1. A small (n = 13) prospective pilot study compared intermittent daily hyperbaric chamber versus homecare "normobaric" 100% oxygen therapy in a heterogeneous chronic (14.1 year duration KDSS = 5.2) multiple sclerosis population. Both protocols provided no significant change in KDSS but did have similar transient significant (p < 0.05) subjective neuro-urinary response. Weekly "booster" sessions were required to maintain this response. 2. Then a single blinded, placebo (compressed air) controlled study was conducted on a heterogeneous MS population (n = 32, mean KDSS = 5.4) to determine the efficacy of weekly 1 ATA to 1.2 ATA 100% 02 therapy. The unknown gas was administered once per week during a disabled "scuba" aquatics program using a demand regulator. Differential (p < 0.10) subjective neurourinary response was demonstrated only at the lATA pp02 concentration. -note: The cool and buoyant aquatic environment itself had a significant (p < 0.10) impact on both objective KDSS and subjective neuro-urinary parameters. 3. Next a comprehensive unblinded longitudinal triple crossover study with ten advanced (11.0 year KDSS = 6.4) chronic progressive/stable patients acting as their own control, examined the therapeutic dose-response to varying protocols using homecare administered 1 ATA 100% oxygen. Once again, significant (p < 0.05) transient differential subjective neurourologic response was demonstrated.
