| Abstract: | The search for an adequate ventilator for use during transportation and within the multiplace chamber has been longstanding. Size, voltage limits, safety, and affects of pressure have been limitations for currently available systems. Ideally the system should be easy to use, portable, widely applicable, safe, and affordable. Many systems have been extensively studied in the chamber, few emerged functional. Problems are unique to each ventilator: for example, the Penlon lacks alternate modes of ventilation and alarms, and the Seimens ventilator is complex, uses 110 current, and is expensive. We have developed a transport system with a modified Puritan Bennett Companion ventilator for transport of the critically ill ICU patient. The system includes 12 volt internal and external supply, two small E gas cylinders, complete hemodynamic monitoring system, and the modified portable volume ventilator. The Companion 2800 is a 12 volt piston-driven volume ventilator modified for higher working pressure and 50 PSI gas supply. The ventilator is easy to use, has a wide range of volumes and rate, capable of assist, control, or IMV modes. PEEP is maintained with an external water column or spring valve. This system has been tested to 6 ATA and functions well maintaining rate and volume. The system is easy to use, affordable, and provides safe, uninterrupted ventilation during transportation and treatment. |
