Title: Design of the next generation of research vessels

Abstract: This paper attempts to review the process used to update and replace the United States academic oceanographic research fleet. The process involved establishment, with government, academic, and industrial participation, of scientific needs and the turning of these needs into specific ship designs. Three resulting conceptual designs are covered in moderate detail as well as an imaginative suggestion for use of a large scale Arctic research submersible in lieu of a surface ship. The adaptation of these research tools for diving, ROVs and submersibles leads into a discussion of current U.S. government, industry and academic interests in making low-cost submersibles and ROVs widespread research tools. The process of qualifying operators of single occupant research submersibles is compared to the process of qualifying divers.
