dc.description.abstract Diving has been used as a valuable tool in the development of several key buoy systems. One application where diving was utilized is described in detail. A Real Time Environmental Arctic Monitoring (RTEAM) system has been developed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. This mooring uses a variable buoyancy ascent module, connected to an instrumented cable to transmit data to a satellite. The module fills an internal ballast tank and rises to the surface once a day, transmits, and then vents the ballast tank and descends to a rest position. Diving was used in the development phase to assess and fine tune the sea-keeping, ballasting and valve timing of the ascent module. The buoyancy and hydrodynamics of the module change continuously during the ascent and descent. Diving and underwater photography were used to identify and correct problems that developed during sea trials. en_US
