Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Very few reports examining diving injuries or fatalities have been made in Japan. We analyzed the data from the DAN Japan hot-line cases and the diving accidents to which the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) responded. METHODS: Diving injuries: Data from hot-line cases that occurred between April 1992 and March 1999 were analyzed. Diving fatalities: The JCG has collected all available information on the diving accidents that occurred between January 1994 and December 1999. Information was obtained from witnesses, diving buddies, and the doctors who treated the victims. All fatality cases were reviewed to determine the primary cause of the disasters. RESULTS: We analyzed 587 cases of injuries and 132 fatalities related to diving. Only 10.7percent of injuries occurred in divers who were 40 years old or older, whereas 45.5percent of fatalities occurred in this age category. Thirty-eight point six percent of the fatalities were classified as "missing partner", and an additional 31.1percent of the diving fatalities were classified as "solo diving". Nearly 70percent of the fatalities were associated with diving without a partner. CONCLUSION: In sport diving, solo diving should be avoided and extra attention should be given to the exact location of diving buddies at all times. More conservative dives by divers over the age of 40 might also result in a decrease in diving-related fatalities.
