[abstract] REVIEW OF IMPLANTED CARDIAC RHYTHM DEVICES IN THE HYPERBARIC CHAMBER

Abstract

Background: Implanted pacemakers and AICDS are getting smaller. There have been recent unpublished anecdotal reports of pacemaker failure related to pressurization. There is no centralized source of current information for anticipating the effect of pressure on these devices. Method: Manufacturers of cardiac pacemakers and implanted defibrillators were contacted for the results of testing and updated recommendations for pressure limits on their devices. Chart review was done on patients with pacemakers or AICDS who underwent hyperbaric treatments. Results: An updated table showing maximum tested depths and information about different cardiac devices. Conclusions: No adverse events noted at this chamber over the surveillance period. Most implanted devices are rated to at least 2.4 ATA.
