dc.description.abstract At the U.M.A. Meeting last year I was given the opportunity of presenting my work on a diving apparatus, designed primarily for use in the immediate emergency of life saving. Shortly therafter a sequence of events brought war very close to our shores. Naval forces appeared to be playing an increasing part in this war. It was a natural impluse to attempt an application of the basic principles developed through work on the "Life Saving Unit" to the construction of an underwater respiratory unit which might be of use to the U.S. Navy and other branches of the service. Obviously the original unit in its over-simplified form was wholly inadequate for such a purpose. Many of the very qualities which determined the usefulness of the unit for life guard work rendered it unfit for the type of work which would be demanded of it by our navy (chiefly salvage and underwater repair). A new unit was required which would provide greater safety and durability, better vision, extended diving time and depth, and a greater range of usefulness while retaining a simplicity of function which would obliviate the necessity for training in its use. The following pages describe the result of an attemmpt to devise such a respiratory unit. [Editor's note: Foreword] en_US
