Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Chemical neurotoxic exposure to solvents, pesticides, mycotoxins (mold toxins), metals and other toxins can result in impairment of cognitive memory and emotional functions (toxic encephalopathy) for years after toxic exposure has ceased. We have documented this long lasting impairment with functional brain scanning by SPECT. While Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) usually occurs in the young it certainly also occurs in adults. We have found that neurotoxic exposure can cause acquired adult ADD in patients who were never even suspected of having ADD prior to neurotoxic exposure. We have also found mHBOT (ATA 1.3; O2 concentration 24percent) to be an effective treatment for toxic encephalopathy. In our initial study we used functional SPECT brain scans as indicators of improvement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study we evaluated patients with acquired ADD as documented by clinical history and by using a computerized Test Of Variables of Attention (T.O.V.A.). In these patients ADD was part of their toxic encephalopathy. Mild HBO was given on ten consecutive days (except weekends) for one hour each. T.OV.A. test was done before and after the series of mHBO sessions. RESULTS: We are presenting eleven patients with toxic encephalopathy. Of these eight patients showed significant improvement and three showed marginal improvement in T.O.V.A. after ten consecutive one-hour sessions with mHBOT. All patients also improved subjectively. CONCLUSION: Our findings show that mHBOT helps to improve brain function as documented by SPECT and TOVA. toxic encephalopathy, mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Attention deficit disorder
