Abstract: Most monoplace chamber manufacturers supply a demand-style breathing system for air breaks. Many patients are unable to receive an effective air break due to limited dexterity, poor mask fit, or insufficient inspiratory effort to trigger the demand valve. Some facilities utilize simple disposable non-rebreathing masks, but the design of these masks limits their effectiveness. We developed a continuous-flow, non-rebreathing mask system composed of off the shelf components that overcomes many of the deficiencies inherent in both demand valve systems and disposable NRB masks. This mask system can be used for in-chamber air breaks as well as oxygen challenge testing during TcPO2 studies.
