Title: [abstract] THE NURSING ROLE IN HYPERBARIC MEDICINE
Author: Josefsen, L; Woodward, C; Lewis, D; Hodge, J; Camporesi, EM
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Historical background: The art and science of nursing are uniquely combined in this setting as nurses not only deal with the technology of the hyperbaric chamber, the physiological monitoring and life support equipment, but also with the art of psychologically adapting the patient and providing emotional support and health education (1). The hyperbaric nurse must be knowledgeable of the complex patient environment found in hyperbaric nursing in order to practice in this setting. METHOD: Nursing has been involved in the planning and development of early hyperbaric programs. Nursing needs and patient care needs were identified. Articles were published in nursing journals around the world. Nurses and respiratory therapists met at the UMS meeting in 1973, and again in 1982 along with the Associates. The annual UMS conference in 1978 held workshops specifically for nurses. RESULTS: The Baromedical Nurses Association (BNA), founded in 1985, formally recognized the specialty of hyperbaric nursing. The BNA promotes professional activities that enhance the effectiveness of baromedical nursing in the health care system and promotes educational opportunities for nurses practicing in this specialty. CONCLUSION: Nursing practice deals with activities that address human responses to actual or potential problems related to an altered health status (physiological, psychological, sociological, and cognitive). The goal of hyperbaric nursing is to provide safe, cost-effective, quality patient care, according to established standards (3).
