Title: MK XI Canister Performance After Flooding.
Author: James, TW
Abstract: The MK XI canister was tested while submerged in a water bath in a horizontal and a vertical position. It was then flooded with 500, 1000, and 1500 cc of water. Time taken for the concentration of CO2 to reach 1% was recorded, as well as breathing resistance of the flooded canister. It was found that the concentration of CO2 reached critical levels most rapidly while the canister was in the horizontal position and flooded with either 1000 or 1500 cc of water. The breathing resistance, however, was higher when the conister was flooded in the vertical position. It was concluded that although CO2 continues to be scrubbed, even during major flooding, this condition should not be ignored, and measures should be taken to end or shorten the dive. Minor flooding which does not noticeably increase breathing resistence should not concern the diver. (Author)
