Title: [abstract] PULMONARY AND CARDIOVASCULAR FLUID SHIFTS IN EXPERIMENTAL DYSBARISM.

Abstract: Plasma volume losses, pulmonary edema and pulmonary hypertension have been reported in dysbarism, although the temporal development and possible function inter- relationships of these changes are poorly understood. Sixteen immature pigs were subjected to an atmosphere of 90% N2, 10% O2 at 50 psig for 30 minutes followed by decompression at 10 psi/min. without stops. Pulmonary extravascular-extracellular water was measured by a dual isotope technique (22Na and 125RISA) before compression, immediately, 30 minutes and 60 minutes after decompression. Cardiac output and plasma volumes were determined by isotope dilution at similar intervals. Aortic and pulmonary artery pressures were monitored throughout the experiment. A control group of 9 animals was similarly studied but not subjected to the compression profile. Pulmonary hypertension was demonstrable 30 minutes after decompression but returned to control values one hour after decompression. Pulmonary extravascular-extracellular water increased by an average of 6 cc/Kg body weight within the first half hour following decompression and maintained that value in the one hour post decompression period. Plasma volumes decreased by an average of approximately 45% during the first 30 minutes after decompression. The plasma volume loss exceeded the volume of pulmonary uptake by approximately 4 to 1. The sites of the additional plasma volume loss remain uncertain. Pulmonary vascular pressures, pulmonary extravascular, extra-cellular water and plasma volumes of the control (not compressed) animals remained essentially unchanged throughout the experimental period.
