Title: [abstract] SHALLOW SATURATION HYPERBARIC EXPOSURES TO NITROGEN-OXYGEN ENVIRONMENTS AND ISOBARIC SWITCHES TO HELIUM-OXYGEN
Author: Harvey, CA
Abstract: The U.S. Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory has conducted a series of 3 shallow habitat air dives (SHAD) and 3 dives employing nitrogen-oxygen (Nitrox) saturation exposures (NISAT) . The SHAD series included exposures at 50 and 60 FSWG with excursions up to 5 FSWG and down to 250 FSWG. Excursion durations remained within no-decompression limits and included eight hour excursions to 100 FSWG. NISAT-I exposed 3 subjects to 198 FSWG in a Nitrox mixture for 7 days. Nausea, vomiting and malaise encountered during the second thru tenth hours ended when the oxygen partial pressure was elevated from 0.2 to 0.3 ATA. NISAT-11 exposed 3 subjects at 66 FSWG to a Nitrox mixture containing 0.3 ATA of oxygen for 3 days followed by an isobaric shift to a helium-oxygen (Heliox) mixture for 3 days. Similarly NI3AT-111 exposed subjects at 99 FSWG to Nitrox containing 0.3 ATA of oxygen for 3 days with an isobaric switch to Heliox. This experiment produced skin lesions in all 3 subjects and leg discomfort in 2 of the 3 subjects, including one case that was successfully treated as decompression sickness developing without a change in ambient pressure. These experiments further delineate the physiological limits to the use of Nitrox mixes and demonstrated signs and symptoms thought to be related to isobaric supersaturation resulting from the serial use of multiple inert gases.
