Title: [abstract] BLOOD ENZYME AND HEMATOLOGICAL CHANGES ASSOCIATED WITH DECOMPRESSION SICKNESS (D.S.) IN RATS.
Author: Freeman, D; Philp, RB
Abstract: Varying degrees of D.S. were produced in rats according to the technique of Philp and Gowdey (Aerospace Med. 33 1433-1437, 1962) and PGOT, PLDH, PCPK and PAl.Ph. enzymes, as well as PCV, Hb and platelet counts were determined immediately and at 24 hr intervals after decompression. After 24 hr there were significant increases in PGOT (300%) and PLDH (300%) in moderately affected rats and greater increases (PGOT, BOO%, PLDH, 1900%) in severely affected ones. Hemoconcentration and loss of platelets was also observed. Hemolysis was observed in these groups immediately after decompression, making accurate enzyme analyses impos- sible. The pattern of enzyme increases in this study suggests that liver, lung and brain tissue may sustain the majority of damage from D.S. as opposed to skeletal muscle, heart muscle or bone. There was also a relationship between the severity of the attack and the amount of enzymes detected. The results suggest that such enzyme analyses may be useful in assessing clinical cases of D.S. when the onset is significantly delayed i.e. 12-24 hr after decompression. Their value in cases which present during or immediately after decompression is equivocal at present. Abbr: plasma glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase (PGOT), plasma lactic-dehydrogenase (PLDH), plasma creatine phosphokinase (PCPK), plasma alkaline phosphatase (PA1. Ph.), packed cell volume (PCV), hemoglobin (Hb)
