Abstract: In order to evaluate limits of human performance in saturation diving, tests were performed on physiological samples obtained from 16 divers involved in 3 separately-conducted working dives at chamber pressures simulating maximum depths equivalent to 300, 1000, and 1600 ft below sea level in conjunction with the USN Experimental Diving Unit, Washington, D.C. All dives were conducted in a He-O2 gaseous atmosphere where the pO2 was maintained between 0.30 and 0.35 atm while the pHe varied. The deep dive was designed to document the ability of a diver to perform useful work in the water using U.S. Navy underwater breathing apparatus and U.S. Navy diving procedures. All divers were allowed free access to food during the periods of confinement which ranged from 10 days in the shallow dive to 32 days in the deep dive. Dietary records were maintained by each diver. Blood and urine samples were collected prior to and during the dives for evaluation of vitamin status and other clinical indicators of nutritional state. Marked depression of serum vitamin C was observed in the 1000 and the 1600 ft dive. This may be a result of chronic exposure to a pO2 greater than the normal 0.2 atm. In the deep dive, a biphasic change in serum total protein and albumin occurred wherein the concentration of these components increased during compression and decreased during decompression. Significant fluctuations in serum levels of potassium, calcium, and magnesium were also observed. Thiamin output in urine, normalized on the basis of creatinine excretion, was depressed in all divers during the 1000 ft dive. In general, all divers lost weight despite near normal caloric consumption. These and other observations suggest that saturation diving mimics the effect of caloric restriction.
