Title: [abstract] DEVELOPMENT OF JOB-RELATED PHYSICAL SELECTION CRITERIA FOR U.S. NAVY FLEET DIVERS.
Author: Marcinik, EJ; Hyde, DE; Taylor, WF
Abstract: BACKGROUND: The current U.S. Navy fleet diver physical screening test (500-yd swim, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, and 1.5-mile run) has been found to be a poor predictor of representative physically demanding job task performance. A mismatch between diver physical capabilities and job requirements may increase the risk of injury and decrease productivity. To improve diver physical selection procedures, the relationship between an Experimental Fitness Battery (EFB) and job tasks representative of diver's work was investigated. METHODS: Subjects were 146 male diver candidates (age 25.1 ± 4.3 yr, X ± SD, range 18-37 yr) undergoing training at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center, Panama City, FL. Performance on both the EFB and job tasks was measured. The EFB contained measures of body composition (lean body weight, percent body fat), power (long jump), muscular strength (shoulder press, lat pull, arm curl, and leg press), and swimming endurance (lOOO-yd fin swim). Job tasks included (1) Ladder climb, (2) SCUBA-bottle carry, and (3) Umbilical pull. RESULTS: Multiple regression results show EFB scores can be used to predict diver job performance. Correlations ranged between R=.33 (Lat pull strength predicts SCUBA bottle carry time) to R=.47 (Lean body weight predicts umbilical pull time). CONCLUSION: The EFB offers an improvement in job task performance prediction compared to current physical selection criteria. Assessment of female diver job task performance will allow for the development of a performance-based, gender-neutral physical screening test. (Supported by NMRDC Work Unit No. M0099.0IB-1428)
