Title: [abstract] DCS AND PREFLIGHT SURFACE INTERVALS AFTER DRY, RESTING DIVES TO 60 FSW.
Author: Vann, RD; Gerth, WA; Corson, KS; Denoble, PJ
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Flying after diving data are limited, perhaps explaining inconsistent preflight surface interval (SI) guidelines (e.g., 2 hrs USN, 12 hrs DAN, 24 hrs USAF). This abstract reports human trials designed to assist in establishing more rational flying after diving guidelines. METHODS: Two test dive profiles were selected from the PADI Recreational Dive Planner: (a) 60'/55min; (b) 60'/55min, 60min SI, 60'/30min. Each profile was followed by a preflight SI and 4 hour exposure at 8,000'. Subjects were dry and at rest. Preflight SI was the experimental variable. SIs were accepted or rejected for the study according to pre-established rules. Acceptance: 0 DCS/23 trials; 1 DCS/35 trials; 2 DCS/46 trials. Rejection: Any neurological incident; 2 pain-only incidents/l0 trials; 3 pain-only incidents. DCS was diagnosed if signs/symptoms were persistent and relieved by recompression. Symptoms that were transient or unresponsive to recompression were called ambiguous. Precordial Doppler bubbles and arterial oxygen saturation were monitored. RESULTS: 26 subjects were female (mean age 33, range 20-49) and 43 male (mean age 35, range 18-59). There were 113 trials with 1-7 trials/subject (mean 1.6), 5 DCS incidents (see table), and 7 ambiguous incidents. Profile (a) had no incidents with 11 and 12 hr SIs. Profile (b) had no incidents with a 15 hr SI. CONCLUSION: For profiles tested, results are consistent with 12-15 hr preflight SIs. This may not be so for wet, working dives. SIs shorter than 11-12 hrs may not be advisable. Further trials will be conducted. Supported, in part, by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. Profile SI DCS Trials; a 3* I,II,II 36; 6* II 6; 9* II 7; 11 0 13; 12 0 27; b 15 0 22 '-rejected~ I-pain-only; II-neurological
