dc.description.abstract BACKGROUND: A survey was developed to analyze national staffing levels, utilization, and services provided at monoplace hyperbaric (HBO2) facilities in the United States. The public and private sectors were then compared. METHODS: Surveys were mailed to the 176 monoplace HBO2 facilities operating in the United States. Questions included: number of chambers in use per facility, years of operation, number and type of staff and ancillary services provided, and average number of patients treated daily. Descriptive analysis, t-test, and Chi-square test were used to examine the data with a significance level set at p less than 0.05. RESULTS: 65percent of surveys were returned. The mean number of monoplace chambers in use per facility is 2.01, with an average of 9.66 years of operation. For each facility, the mean number of full-time personnel is: Physicians (MD) 2.20; Nurses (RN) 2.10; Respiratory Therapists (RT) 1.65; Dive Medical Technicians (DMT) 1.43; and Emergency Medical technicians (EMT) 2.2. The mean number of part-time personnel is: MD 2.98; RN 2.73; RT 3.44; DMT 1.83; and EMT 1.44. The mean number of patients treated daily per facility in 1995 was 5.02, and 5.21 in 1996. Based on their 1996 experience, 27.19percent of facilities found it necessary to increase staffing, and 24.56percent decreased staffing. 83.33percent of the facilities provide routine wound care, and an identical number offer transcutaneous oxygen monitoring. 43.86percent perform vascular evaluation, and only 9.65percent offer growth factor therapy. No significant difference was found in the level of staffing, facility utilization or primary services provided between publicly and privately operated monoplace HBO2 chambers. CONCLUSION: This study determined the utilization, staffing and services provided at monoplace HBO2 chambers throughout the United States. Comparison of public verses private HBO2 monoplace chamber centers revealed no significant differences in any of the parameters queried. en_US
