Title: [abstract] A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO THE PHYSICAL SCREENING OF NEW RECREATIONAL SCUBA DIVERS.
Author: Thombs, PA; Foley, B
Abstract: Although the safety record of sport SCUBA diving is excellent avoidable cases of decompression sickness, air embolism and drowning occur. Screening student divers for behavioral and physical conditions that predispose them to pulmonary over-inflation, cardiac arrythmia, altered mental status and other pathologic states can further improve diving safety. The commercial nature of recreational SCUBA training in the United States has made approaches such as that of the British Subaqua Club unusable. Additionally physicians with expertise in diving medicine may not be readily accessible to all students. Hitherto, because of these and other problems, no standardized approach to determining fitness to dive had been formulated for use in the United States. A cooperative effort between diving medicine physicians, The Diver's Alert Network (DAN) and all SCUBA training certifying agencies has produced a practical screening procedure. The procedure combines a standard yes/no screening questionnaire with a brief educational guide which allows physicians with no previous experience in diving medicine to make cogent decisions regarding fitness to dive. DAN has agreed to function as a further resource for physicians examining divers.
