Abstract: FOREWARD: This report was prepared as a chapter in a bioengineering data book being produced under the direction of Dr. C.W. Schilling by the Biological Sciences Communication Project of The George Washington University, supported by ONR Contract N00014-67-A-02l4-00l3. Ocean Systems, Inc., has been a subcontractor on that project. To facilitate prompt distribution of this information we are issuing this report separately, ahead of the Data Book. Ocean Systems has had a long-standing interest in chamber fire safety, dating back to 1965 when our ignorance of what constituted cost-effective procedures led us to investigate the combustion aspects of chamber operation,under ONR Contract N00014-66-C-0149 and N00014-70-C-0169. The original emphasis was on defining the atmospheric aspects--effects of partial pressure and percentage of oxygen and the relationship to the inert gas defined by both pressure and chemical composition--and this led then to concern over choice of materials and criteria for handling electric power. More recently at a much lower level of effort we have been involved in testing of gaseous and foam extinguishing agents. This report is by no means the last word in chamber fire safety, but we hope it will perhaps provide a few beneficial ideas to those who can use them. (NOTE: reference for NFPA 99)
