Title: Developing a Training Program for Scientific Diving Environmental Health and Safety Professionals.
Author: Pollock, NW
Abstract: Many individuals become involved in scientific diving to support their research activity during academic training. Diving is typically a tool and not the focus of the educational program. Many diving safety officers are drawn from this pool with only modest familiarization with the more formal elements involved in traditional environmental health and safety programming. The integration of diving safety into such programs makes clear the value of developing opportunities for education directed specifically at careers in health and safety based on diving expertise. This paper will discuss the history of scientific diving safety officer qualifications and training and present an outline for a scholarship program to prepare student candidates as environmental health and safety diving professionals.
