dc.description.abstract The document discusses the physical and psychological factors which produce a wide variety of perceptual distortions under water. The image of an underwater object is altered in apparent size and distance, its color and brightness are changed, and its outline becomes less distinct. The decrements in a scuba diver's performance which result from these distortions may, however, be considerably lessened by adaptation to the underwater environment. The decrements are specified in detail and methods of promoting adaptation are discussed. en_US
