| Abstract: | A review of the pertinent literature relating to the physiology of ventilatory dynamics using helium-oxygen breathing mixtures is presented together with conclusions regarding the indications and contraindications for their use in clinical medicine. A review of relevant studies in diving medicine is included because of the clarification which these investigations lend to problems of pulmonary ventilation.
