dc.description.abstract Changes in abundance, distribution and size structure of indicator plant, invertebrate, and fish populations inhabiting kelp forests in Channel Islands National Park are described. Study sites include examples of boreal, temporate, and transition zone giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, communities off the California coast. Annual samples from 1982 through 1985 show effects of major winter storms and an extreme El Nino event. The needs for long-term ecological data sets and natural control areas to interpret kelp forest dynamics are discussed. en_US
