Title: Vestibular Disorders During Stable Deep Depths
Author: Sundmaker, WKH; Lambertsen, CJ
Abstract: Vertigo has boen described as occurring frequently during all kinde of diving activities . -1- Two types of diver's vertigo are currently recognized. Both occur with changes in ambient pressure, usually during ascent or sometime thereaf~. Alternobaric Vertigo, the more benign form of tho two, was namedso by Lundgren in 1965. This vertigo may last fro~ seconds to 15 minutes at a time, and is probably related to asymmetric overpressure in the middle ears during ascent. Alternobaric vertigo, although at times severe and disabling, has not been followed by permanent changes in vestibular function. The other, and not-so-benign type of vertigo, occurs as part of the Decoonression Syndrooe, secondary to bubble foroation and gas embolism. This type may be followed by permanent auditory, vestibular, and general neurological deficits. An entirely different set of circumstances has produced vertigo unexpectedly in our subjects, while they were exposed to a constant high pressure. This called for an explanation and a search !or factors oth9r than had heretofore been recognized in the production of vertigo in diving. This communication is a summary of pertinent data surrounding the occurrence of isobaric vertigo in three of the four subjects and suggests that isobaric gas counter diffusion must be considered as an alternate etiology in the development of vestibular derangements at stable pressure.
